Domaine des Montarels as it is known today dates back to the Roman times where wine was believed to have been produced. However, the first written records dates back to 975 A.D.
During this time the Domaine was a small hamlet which was home to several families. It thrived as a wine making Domaine throughout the 19th and 20th century, up until the 1950’s when the Domaine was divided up and sold off.
There are now two main parts to the Domaine. The part we purchased in 2005 includes our main house, which was a church from 1084 up until the French revolution. A smaller house, a barn, and dependencies are set amongst 13 hectares (33 acres) of vines.
Wine production on the premises ceased in the 1950’s, and the grapes grown on the land were sold to the Alignan du vent cooperative each season. In 1992 the co-op acquired the rights to use the name ‘Domaine des Montarels’ for its bottles. As a result we reverted to using the ancient Latin name of ‘Domaine de Montazellis’ for our bottles (a name that was used throughout the Middle Ages).
Since taking on the vineyard in 2005 we faced two main challenges: producing quality grapes whilst preserving the environment, and getting the cave back in working order. This involved a tremendous amount of renovation and heavy investment in modern equipment.
After 3 years of studying and back-breaking work from all those involved we are delighted to offer you our range of wines made from carefully selected grapes.
